Description

This has to be the best paint I have ever used. You need very little as its pure pigment. It goes many time further than any other paint and is the same colour in the bottle as when fired.

Fire to cone 04 if on greenware or 05/06 if on earthenware bisque

Can be used on ready glazed China just re fire the design to 04 or 05 or 06 and it will melt into the existing glaze.

Apart from pinks and purples they all fire to stoneware cone 6. the pink and purple fad out.

(scroll down page to see colour swatch reference examples)

Underglazes that go directly on to unfired clay  wet or dry.

Very true to the unfired colour. Shake well before applying 1 coat is best as this is a paint for detail work when you only need one coat such as hand and foot prints, stamping and sponging with sponge its. painting designs e.g.. flowers, building, portraits, animals, landscapes, anything where you just want intense bright colour but painting once only.

should you want to put it on heavier you can but be aware sometimes it socks up the top glaze a bit.

Allow to dry between coats (can dry with a hairdryer) dry’s in seconds

  • Goes on wet greenware or dry greenware
  • bisque
  • stoneware or earthenware
  • ready glazed China

About the Colour-2-Clay colours.

These colours have been developed by Rachel Byass  and only sold direct from Rachel Byass Ceramics shop and web site.

In our studio, we use a lot of clay and we found that the schools do not want to pay for two visits, so we now make and paint them right away in one visit on the wet clay.

  1. They are designed to go directly onto clay known as Greenware and have a firing range 03, 04,05 temperature which is up to 1100.
  2.  All you do is make the pot, dry it off to leather hard so it won’t bend when it is being painted and then paint the pot. Dry a little to the touch between coats if you want an opaquer look you can use up to 3 coats, we mainly do 1 to 2 coats. It is un necessary to put a lot on even when applied thin say on the wheel while spinning it is still bright.
  3. If you fire it into the bisque first you will find the result quite amazing very stronger and opaque and you can even put light on top of dark such as white on black because of the clay content being  near opaque.
  4. All the colours can be mixed together to make other colours and also used to strengthen underglazes that a week in pigment such as fun strokes stroke and coat just add a little and it will make it much brighter.
  5. The clay colour is ideal for hand print as you only stamp the hands once and the colour will be stronger enough and show all the life lines
  6. The colour can be used in slip. In a jug of clay slip put a few teaspoons of clay-2-colour on the top of the slip cut a pattern in it and then pour the slip into the mould carefully. Leave for 2 minutes and then pour and discard the slip as it will be coloured. You then pour normally uncoloured slip into the same jar to give ether pot its thickness. This is called Agateware which is quite beautiful creating lovely coloured patterns on the surface of the clay object,
  7. Another great technique is Sgraffito. All you do is make your clay object paint it with 2 to three coats of Clay-2-Colour paint and then use the Sgraffito to cut through the colour to the white clay below.
  8. General painting with the clay colours results in very vibrant artwork all in one lesson.

  1. I was slightly apprehensive about glazing directly onto Greenware as previous attempts with other brands had not produced brilliant results, but I can categorically say that these are the most amazing true to colour glazes I have ever used. The depth of colour is incredible. These are now my ‘Go-To’ colours when I am doing a Build and Glaze workshop.
